RE: iMac Question

According to this thread, that speaker jack puts out some extra wattage for speakers and also detects when you have speakers attached. They recommend using the headphone jack. As for newer macs - all of the ones I have and have used have regular 1/8" jacks. The cool thing about the new jacks is that they double as optical outs too, just get the cable from Apple and you can connect them to any stereo/speakers that take optical in. J

RE: Macintosh and Music?

Another option is some of the internet radio stations, like Pandora or AOL radio. Sadly I think the days of Pandora are limited from what I have heard and read... "In 2007, an obscure federal panel agreed with a SoundExchange request and ordered a doubling of the per-song performance royalty that Web radio stations pay to performers and record companies. Under this scheme, internet radio would pay double the royalty as satellite radio. As a result the founder of Pandora has stated that the company may be on the verge of collapse." Source Wikipedia This is correct - they may pull the plug on themselves unless things improve. All the more reason to enjoy it while you can. J

Another option is some of the internet radio stations, like Pandora or AOL radio. Pandora allows you to choose artists you like and they play similar artists for you. Then you have the option to buy songs you like through iTunes. It does require internet connection though, but works well even on Edge. J

RE: Airport Extreme Base Station

Are the lights on when you plug it in? Any flashing amber, green, anything? Might still be under warranty, if you bought it with an AMEX card then you have an extra year at least. J

RE: WiFi data security risk

Well i looked at the news but still have a hard time getting the idea. I have a linksys and have been trying to figure how to turn off the wireless part as i have hard wired it. I will figure it out sooner or later but for now can i just unscrew the atenna and remove it? Maybe put a bud lite beer can over the atenna? Removing the antenna will affect your range but more then likely people will still be able to connect. There should be a check box for WLAN in the config tool. Make sure you're using the real tool and not the wizard. Generally you open your web browser and go to http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.100.1 J

RE: Help - IPOD/MP3 ?'s

I'm well aware that Apple invented Firewire. What I was saying or at least I thought what I was saying was that Apple adopted Firewire and offered it standard well before anyone else did. To this day you can find computers that don't come with a firewire interface, even though it's an industry standard. The point was that Apple is offering things considered industry standard well before others and are often/ no always on the leading edge of technology. AAC is also an industry standard, yet many are only now just supporting it and some not at all. Apple was so far ahead of the big players that many have the misconception that AAC is actually Apple's format, a misconception that is repeated here very often. My bad - now I agree with you! :B J

RE: Help - IPOD/MP3 ?'s

I have a Zune. Love it! No ties to Apple or the DRM bad compression! As others have said, DRM and compression are DIFFERENT! iTunes PLUS content on the iTunes store use 192bps encoding and AAC compression to get some of the highest quality available online. I get it from my CDs or from Yahoo or Amazon for $1.99. Guess what? You can do the SAME THING with an iPod, just rip the CD's in iTunes, iTunes fills in all of the artist, album, and track info for you and adds the songs to your library. You can even have it automatically sync music to your iPod every time you connect to get the most recently "ripped" tunes. Itunes erased all of my music because I tryed to move something from my friends MP3 player that was not on my Ipod list. I have been using iTunes for a while and used to even strip off the DRM so I could share songs with friends. I used iTunes to do all of the sharing, just had to remove DRM so it would copy over. I have never had iTunes erase anything as retribution, and it asks you 3 times before permanently deleting anything. 1 to make sure you want to remove it from iTunes, and 2x to make sure you want to delete the physical file. Apple just adopted the OPEN SOURCE format well before many others, as they did with Firewire. While you're right about AAC, you're wrong about Firewire. Apple actually invented Firewire and started the work on it just as Intel started USB. Apple funded the IEEE 1394 working group to get it finished and standardized but they charged a royalty for the Firewire name. That is why Sony calls it i.Link and most people call it IEEE1394. J

RE: Encrypted WIFI ?

Because no matter how well a WIFI signal may be "Encrypted" ...(encoded)... it can be easily unencrypted or "decoded" by a computer expert with the know-how and proper equiptment.... You left out one thing: TIME. In my post in the other WiFi discussion I said that reputable sites use encryption and you're relatively safe giving financial information on those sites - because the transmission is encrypted. This means it should be safe from your computer to the site's computer regardless of whether you're at home, at Starbucks, ethernet, or WiFi, or AirCard. The latest encryption methods thus far do not have security holes limiting hackers to "brute-force" attacks. For the AES 128bit standard, estimates on current computer systems place a brute force attack as taking 149 trillion years to be successful. Furthermore, AES 128 is acceptable for Military communications, and AES 192 is acceptable for TOP SECRET designated communications by the NSA. Given that, many banks are now using AES 256, so we should be fine. J

RE: WiFi data security risk

Yet another SCARY article about computer security. These news people just love to scare everyone. The fact is no network is 100% secure. If you are in a populated area your network should be secured somehow. If you want to leave it open to "share" your internet, then you should have every computer locked down and file sharing turned off. The real question becomes, what do you have to steal and is it worth the effort? Business, like the restaurants in the article, may provide easy access to 1000's of credit card numbers. But what do you have on your network? And when you use reputable websites from your home network, the credit information should be completely encrypted anyway. J

RE: Click here to get the plug in

Well we definitely need more info than that to help you out but let me take a guess. I'm guessing your browsing to a web page that has a big blank square with a picture of a puzzle piece and the phrase "click here to get the plug in." What this means is the web site it using a specialized format to display their content. The most common are Flash and Quicktime, however there are many more. When you click the link you will go to a download page for the plug-in software. Usually content that requires a plug-in is pretty large, most often video, 3D images, slideshows, etc. Probably 1-2MB download for the plug-in, so you decide about your dial-up. J

RE: Help - IPOD/MP3 ?'s

What does DRM actually do? Sounds like you download from Itunes to your PC, but then can only copy it off to a IPOD or CD a certain # of times? DRM is essentially copy protection. Microsoft uses one with Media Center, RealPlayer uses something else, and Apple uses FairPlay with iTunes (being phased out!). It is designed so that if you buy a song you can't copy it on a thumb drive and give it to your friend. iTunes tracks the # of physical devices (in theory) you load songs to and tries to limit you to 5. My wife and I share an iTunes account on 2 computers and both have iPhones AND iPods (= 6 devices) and I've never had trouble with the DRM. As best I can tell iTunes effectively limits you to 5 computers but doesn't track the # of iPods you use. iTunes does not count burning to a CD, you can do that as many times as you like. This is actually the easiest method to remove DRM - download a song, burn to CD, delete the original song (or backup and delete), then copy off the CD. Apple is actively phasing out FairPlay DRM with iTunes Plus content. Plus content (denoted by a "+" next to the name in iTunes store) is encoded at a higher bit rate and does not have DRM. The issue with DRM is not the stores but rather the Record Companies and the RIAA. They would have everything DRM'ed and you should have to pay every time you play a song! Apple has publicly supported the removal of DRM as it is ineffective at what it does. I think the most effective (and proven) model thus far is the iTunes Store model where it is so easy to buy the music people don't bother hunting around the P2P networks to find it. J

RE: Mac Office 2008 SP2 Released

Well so far everything looks great. The download was 159MB and took about 3 min, the install takes about 5. I got lucky and didn't run into the problems JasonD did. And the apps definitely start faster. It will be interesting to see how fast Entourage starts from a full reboot because before the update it took a long time. J

RE: Mac Office 2008 SP2 Released

Thanks for the news. I'm downloading now I'll follow up later with details on how the install went. The problem I've been having is Excel running extremely slow for any charting that involves more than say, 50 values. This cascades into Word because when you paste a chart in and preserve the link to Excel it wants to totally reprocess the chart anytime it is visible on screen. J

RE: Printing Labels--Recommendations for Inkjet Printers?

The Dymo label printers are really nice and a good deal. If you want to print large numbers of labels though, I would recommend a cheaper laser printer. Get a Samsung or Minolta or even a small laser. That way the ink lasts longer and you'll really appreciate the speed difference. J

RE: Patio table and WiFi - combines to make it work

Naa, I won't flame him for jacking bandwith Let me put it this way if you left the front door of your house standing wide open... Would you charge someone who walked inside with Breaking and Entering? Neither would I (Illegal entry perhaps, B&E no) Same here.. The idiot who leaves his router un-encrypted is leaving his front door wide open and hanging out a WELCOME sign far as I'm concerned. This does not mean I support jacking bandwith.. Just means I don't condemm those who see the "Welcome" sign and log on in. I agree - if you care so much about people using your connection then you should take the time to figure out how to secure it. It isn't that hard. J

RE: LPs on the Road?

You don't need an ION Turntable if you can get line-level audio out of an existing LP deck (think headphone jack if nothing else). As for software, I recommend Toast Titanium from Roxio. It comes with everything you need and the new version 9 has a feature to automatically recognize converted tracks and fill in the Artist/Song Name info. Roxio has for a long time provided some really good audio clean-up features for converting audio from LP's and tapes. And the latest version can add it to your iTunes library in one click so you can transfer to iPod/iPhone. J
